TEST DRIVE MEME ⚔️️ I

{ QUICK NAV }
Premise ⚔️️ Rules ⚔️️ FAQ ⚔️️ Taken ⚔️️ Reserves ⚔️️ Apply ⚔️️ Locations ⚔️️ Bestiary

A ⦿ Soaking in Your Arrival
    KERPLUNK, SPLASH!

Regardless of what you were in the middle of, you and your familiar have been magically pulled into the world of Avalon just above the Bay's waters. After a brief plunge into the Bay, the rush of water filling your ears and soaking up into every creak and crevice of your body, you may need to cough to clear your airways when you rise above the surface. You'll definitely see other new arrivals plopping in. If you can't swim, a red-headed woman known only as the Lady of the Lake will drag you to the shore if she doesn't spot someone else near you helping so no one ends up drowning. She's a little busy casting directive magic to make sure everyone lands safely and playing lifeguard, so if anyone attempts to talk to her, she'll tell them to head up to the Rent-a-Ride. The shores themselves are littered with new arrivals complaining their way up a staircase carved into the walls of the White Cliffs. There is no railing, so be careful, but if you do fall, be prepared for a mysterious sand hand to reach out of the side of the cliffs to catch you. The hand will pat you atop the head twice before retreating back into the wall. This is the Cliff Beast; despite the name, he is quite friendly.

B ⦿ The Caravan to Camelot
Once everyone is wrangled up to the top of the White Cliffs, the handsome owner of the Rent-a-Ride, Archimedes, will distribute smart phones and a pair of earbuds to everyone before getting them settled in groups into modernized carriages pulled by horses and give them a basic explanation of why and how they've been brought to Avalon: The universe is frozen in time and your character has been brought here by a familiar that was able to bond with them. They'll have to learn magic to help save their own world from destruction, but first they've got to get them to Camelot. It is here that you have the first opportunity to decide who they will be in their new home. You'll have about an hour to wander around here, meet and greet, and pet the horses before it's time to go.

These carriages use fae technology that combats weight, so your character will be able to get in regardless of whether they're light as a feather or weigh two tons. The carts have air conditioning when it's hot, heating when it's cold, and a mystical shield to protect from bugs. There is also a mini-bar that pops out of the console with nip bottles. Characters can use their smartphones to connect to Camelot's internet service, [community profile] avalononline (AOL), to chat with other characters, watch dumb videos, learn about the world, contact Camelot Support (they'll answer any questions they can for you, from how to use a smart phone to where to find quests and resources to learn more about your magic). Be careful if you decide to use your phones while in the caravan-- if you don't use those earbuds and start forcing everyone to listen to your nonsense, Archimedes may make you walk.

C ⦿ The Red Spring
The journey from the White Cliffs to the City of Camelot is a long one, and the first evening you arrive you'll end up spending at the Red Spring, a booming resort town. Because of the volume of new arrivals and vacationers, inn rooms are assigned two-to-a-room. The rooms have two twin beds, a bathroom, a mini-fridge and microwave, and a TV equipped with a couple of entertaining video games and a few free movies.

If you don't want to relax in the room, try taking a dip in the spring for another chance to meet your fellow travelers. The waters have restorative properties that help horses and travelers recover quickly when drunk. It is known to relieve stress, improve energy levels, and mildly accelerate healing.

The springs are also home to a large training grounds just outside town limits, where there are teachers who will teach basic magic safety and help you discover what kind of magic you have together with other new arrivals. Try target practice, obstacle courses, meditation circles, and other ways to try to figure out just what you can do.. if you didn't already have an accidental discovery on the ride there.

A ⦿ Get Fresh
Upon arrival in Camelot travelers are ushered to a large set of wash rooms where they can clean up and make themselves presentable for the Welcome Feast. They are informed that once the feast concludes there will be an announcement on where they can seek lodging and how to begin their magic studies.

B ⦿ Be Merry
After they freshen up, travelers are led into the main dining hall. The decorations range from simplistic to a little more grandiose, it is likely everyone will find something familiar. A modern mash up with a medieval flair. The jester makes his rounds, perhaps he has a joke or two to tell, go ahead, give him a listen or perhaps volunteer to participate in one of the jester's shows, like knife-throwing or hypnotism. Within the crowd of staff there are mummers, a juggler, here and there dabbled through small troupes perform mini skits, perhaps they’ll perform a well known verse from a traveler’s world or tell a tale of fancy from this realm.

C ⦿ Eat Well
A banquet is prepared with food that while all “rustic” in appearance are usually a version of modern dishes ranging from basic roast chicken and veggies to Korean-Mexican fusion and French patisserie. The drinks are much the same; while served in old fashioned goblets, they are drinks modern travelers will be familiar with.

Have a seat, meet a new neighbor, find a roommate, maybe a new or old friend? Talk to the person to your left, your right, across from you. Mingle, enjoy the food, the music, it shouldn’t be long before the information promised is provided. Till then take your fill and get to know your fellow travelers.

You've been here a few days now and have gotten a chance to settle in, find a place to stay, and Camelot's citizens have decided that you've been here long enough to start living your life again. Well, your new life.

A group of citizens have decided to give everyone their first quest.

"Hear ye, hear ye!" a man in chain mail with a tablet with his statement typed up on it declares to a crowd from atop a pedestal. There are two other citizens around him with phones to post the video to AOL later to make sure the word gets heard ye all around.

"Those with magic, we beseech thee! Findeth us a grail most holy hidden in the depths of the Brocéliande! This holy grail is known to grant thine wishes three, a most noble quest for noble souls! Great reward will come to those who find it and proclaim at least one of their wishes to find the great Excalibur for King Arthur!"

This is the first you've heard about King Arthur, and it seems curious that he hasn't yet shown his face around town. It also seems strange that this guy is speaking like he's stepped out of a bad period piece, and probably should be the clue that this is more or less an attempt to haze some of the newcomers by sending them into the forest... but no one is telling newcomers this. It's better to get them out there and start praciticing, after all.

A ⦿ Lost, and Lost, and Lost Again
The Brocéliande is well-known around Camelot for being a forest that's both bountiful and mysterious. Oddities are known to happen that may never happen again to the point that even if something weird happens and you can't prove it, most citizens will assume you're telling the truth.

Which is what makes it peculiar when you keep passing the exact same locations over and over again, as if you've been traveling in circles or reaching the end of the map in a video game and coming out the other end. You're stuck in a space loop. The only way out is to successfully find the one difference in each loop five times in a row and collect it. Maybe it's a strange frog, a crystal that wasn't there before, a small wooden step that doesn't lead anywhere, or some other singular item, you've got to find what stands out... pick the wrong item, and you'll have to start your five count over again, and again, and again...

B ⦿ Grail, and Grail, and Grail Again!?
If you either missed the space loop or managed to get out of it, eventually you'll come to find one of... quite a few copies of a grail with holes in the side placed throughout the forest. They look like they might be good for draining noodles, but that's about it. Though they're spread out, it's entirely possible you'll find more than one, but each of them are placed in situations where it's impossible to get to by normal means. You'll have to use magic! It may be hidden in a bird's nest at the top of the tallest tree, inside of a hole in a rock with bars that prevent you from reaching in (perhaps an animal friend could reach it), inside a boiling pond, or inside the body of a bear fir... there are a load of possibilities, and now's a chance for you to try out your brand new magics! Use one of those samples, find something from the bestiary, or come up with your own adventure to get your hands on that less-than-holy grail.

C ⦿ A Quest Completeish
Or it would be, if you could ever find the guy who announced it... The AOL posts have since been deleted. You may end up spending a lot of time trying to find the guy. At this point, citizens will start telling you that you shouldn't take quests unless they're on the quest board or else you're going to get scammed... that's definitely an olden times themed noodle strainer. If that doesn't make you give up, or perhaps motivates you to find the guy to kick his ass, you'll have to head out to the farmland and chase them through a cornfield. (Be careful not to get lost, it's a maize in there.) If one of the boys are caught, they'll explain they were just testing you-- and hey, you got a free addition to your kitchen! If pressed, they'll apologize and give you a bit of money for your trouble. It's not much, but it'll get you at least a meal.

"Moonbloods? Never heard of 'em."

When that Archimedes guy talked about all of their worlds being frozen in time, Prompto hadn't stopped to think about just how different each world could be. Now it's becoming increasingly obvious that there's going to be a lot of things here that he's not used to.

"Y'know, that is pretty weird! But there might be more people than just who's in this crowd. The big guy didn't say how many worlds there are in the universe that need saving, but it's gotta be a lot."
burstrate: (it's so cute!)

Yeah, chocobos grow fast! They're soft even as adults, but right now she's like a little fluffy cloud.

[Prompto sounds a little wistful as he says it, reaching up to stroke the top of the chocobo's head as she gives a few soft peeps of contentment.

Then he breaks out into a grin,]

Hey, do you wanna pet her? She's really chill with being handled.
burstrate: (up to no good)

[personal profile] burstrate 2020-11-07 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
"Did I get one? Just wait until you see this!"

Prompto is practically bouncing in place as he sticks a couple of fingers in his mouth and whistles. Just like before, it does the job of summoning his chocobo back from wherever she'd ran off to - this time, she scampers up from somewhere behind Noctis. Prompto drops down to one knee, holding his arms for for the chocobo chick to jump into his arms as she vigorously flaps her little wings.

"At first I thought she was lost, but I guess she really is my familiar," he explains as he rises back to his feet, the chocobo chick in his arms. "My best bud is back, and now I get to keep a chocobo! This is really competing for being the best day ever."

[ Saber's plate doesn't actually look too abnormal. It has a normal amount of food on it.

What one wouldn't know, however, is that she's refilled this plate more than once. Servants don't need to eat, but now she does need food.

Or it could just be her usual appetite. Either way, Archer does stick out enough for her to notice him. ]

Archer...?

[ She'd be a little more surprised if it weren't for a certain somebody-else who informed her that the Red Archer was present. ]

[Today is weird, and talking rabbits are also pretty weird, but Nero has long since learned to take these things in his stride. So he doesn't mind sharing a room with said rabbit when it comes to finding somewhere to crash for the night, stripping off his sword and revolver along with his jacket when they get into the room.

He doesn't expect her to just straight up undress, and he politely puts a hand over his eyes as she faceplants onto the bed. Ugh, how does he always get into these situations.]

... I'll go check. [She'll hear the sound of him crossing the room and opening the door to the bathroom.] Yeah, there's a bath and a shower.

"I saw a lot more people climbing the cliff, when I dragged myself out of the water. Definitely a few of us here." And if they're all a different species, well, that's fine. So long as Dust knew who needed help and who needed to be stopped, species didn't matter.

"All I'm sure of is that there isn't much to be sure of, yet."

[Dust may not have quite all his tricks from Falana, but he was made to be quick, dexterous, and agile. Obstacle courses aren't difficult for him, especially when he can jump walls that most people would have to climb.]

[But Louis is better than he gave himself credit for, and Dust could appreciate that he was at least deft enough to weave through danger. That counts for a lot in battle.]

Regis cannot help but look a bit distraught once Noctis mentions the prophecy. He never intended to burden his son with the truth despite knowing someday he would have to. Regis made certain to never speak of it outside of those he trusted most. He wanted to let his son live a normal life as the end drew near. It was a selfish desire on his part, one that doomed the lives of many but it was a choice that Regis made for his son's sake.

"Of course, you do." He whispers after a heavy sigh. "Despite my best efforts, I knew that day would come." The old king falls silent, his sorrowful gaze resting on Noctis for the time being.

There's no enjoying tonight's festivities when the fate of their world rests upon the shoulders of his only son. Regis never understood why the Gods had chosen Noctis to be their champion. If the roles were reversed, Regis would've gladly forsaken his life so his son could live. However, this was all preordained long before their time.

"What will do now that the truth is known to you?" He asks.

Misumi has his arms out to either side, making himself look larger than he actually is, trying to keep the goose at bay. He still isn't really paying much attention to Kuroko though, oops.

"Ummm!!! I thought he'd be scared! It's okay, though, we can just run away, right??"

Because they're running out of backing up space and Misumi is starting to think maybe the goose is just a meanie...

Seems a bit weird to pet him.

[ That's just not a thing. It's a little weird. It's like petty a baby. Do humans pet their babies? ]

He seems nice enough, though.

[ He doesn't seem aggressive, not to Louis. But the familiar defers to him as to whether or not this is appropriate before taking a step forward and allowing the gesture. ]

He won't bite, at least.

How do you know it's him?

[ The culprit, Louis means, of course. He feels like he's been on some weird never-ending chase. As if it's just running in circles of 'not me but I know --'. So, really, it matters to him if this is the last stop. ]

"Lunatia?" he asks. His voice lifts carefully. He has a hard time imagining this guy is mistaking him for someone else, so he considers that there's something going on when it comes down to it and shrugs. "No, I'm not."

He almost regrets asking about volleyball, though. What a dumb question. Clearly, this guy was intensely passionate about the sport, and Louis didn't understand. Sports (clearly) weren't his thing, and honestly where he was from, theater was a bigger deal.

"I'm sure the universe will eventually send you back so you can eventually play pro. What's stopping you from playing here?" Getting some practice in.

Because you'd miss me if it wasn't.

[Nope, had he gotten a thank you, he may have thought this was an imposter. His smirk and the hand he sticks out to offer the shooter a hand up says it all, no skin off his nose.

He already knows Midorima would rather have him around in a strange world than not. No one including the shooter has to tell him that.]

[Takao has had enough of all the craziness, plus he has to room with a stranger. Really, he is debating how lucky he is right now to be here instead of Lunatia.

At least there, he went to sleep each night feeling safe, he had his best friend in the same room as him. Plus, he has found some familiar faces but not all of them.

There are a few he wishes he had seen, so he heads for the springs to relax a little.

The night sparrow flies right over his head, he's become used to its presence as well as the soft chirps it seems only he can hear.

What he is not expecting is an otter, half slumped in the spring.]

Huh? Did someone forget you?

[Takao does not stop to think this could be a human, he in fact thinks this is very much someone's familiar. He does not hesitate when he goes to pick the poor thing up and cuddle it right up against him protectively.]

Don't mention it.

[It wouldn't have been like him to turn a lady away at the door. Especially one that easy on the eyes. He closed the door behind her and set his familiar on the couch while he turned the volume down on his phone. Much as he wanted to keep it where it was, he's got surprise company. Company that doesn't seem much for talking, but if she's in the same boat as him, he can't blame her.

His own issues wouldn't keep him distracted for long when he sees her familiar happily greet his. He gave a chuckle as his familiar returned the greeting with a chirp.]

No kiddin'. [At least it was much needed amusement for him.] Ah. I'm- [He paused briefly. No, there was no point in hiding it here.] Gale. Gale Reinhardt. I've been callin' this little one Gripen.

[Probably dumb to call a gryphon just "gryphon in another language" but whatever. Gale never had a pet. No one said he was going to be good at names.]

Takao honestly thought nothing of it as he sat close enough to just about lean into Kagami's side, it was a comfort. Sure, this place seemed safe, even interesting. Does not mean he is not going to draw comfort from having people he cares about close. He is the type of guy who honestly needs that, he'd be no good all alone.

Takao resists the urge to lean over and scratch Byakko's ears, it was very hard not to do. He has a soft spot for all things fluffy, what can he say. Speaking of, he looks around for a certain cute little ball of fluff.

"Me either, I know I was supposed to be able to do some minor stuff back in Lunatia but I never tried. I'd rather play basketball but I don't see a court around here. Did Tiger come with you?"

And his familiar was no help, had no idea what the sport even was. It is disheartening, though, knowing Takao he will find some way to play, they will just have to get creative!

Alfyn Greengrass | Octopath Traveler

[personal profile] apockatherry 2020-11-08 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
A. Down by the bay, where the watermelons grow LOOK OUT BELOW... (ARRIVAL)

[Luckily, Alfyn's born and bred as he is to the Riverlands. Despite the suddenness of his watery plunge, he's a strong swimmer and makes it easily to shore, where, coughing, he quickly removes his boots, lays out his soaked outerthings, and begins to rummage through the large, leather satchel he's brought with him. Apparently, the safety of its contents means a lot more to him than paltry questions like where is he and what's happening? His eyes widen as the damage becomes clear.]

Egads...

[Wincing with his whole body, the young apothecary retrieves a sodden leather-bound book from his bag. Though he gives it a careful shake and tries to press the water out between his hands, the pages are well on their way to sticking together forever. Alfyn looks around, mouth open to ask for help, and nearly jumps out of his own skin when he notices the colorful creature at his shoulder, fiercely beaked, the size of a large dog.]

Criminy! Another ogre eagle?! [He snatches the book away and scrambles to his bare feet, but the avian thing just sits on its haunches, tilts its head, and waits. After a pause, Alfyn relaxes his shoulders.] Shucks, but you're just a baby, ain't you? If it was your ma or pa I saw before in Orewell, they had to be at least twenty times your size. ...You won't hurt me, will you, now?

[The eaglet scratches itself with a hindclaw, apparently uninterested in the prospect of doing anyone harm. Alfyn sighs, looks at his poor, dripping book, and shakes his head.]

I guess maybe you're as lost as I am. [Another beat, but then he brightens a bit and lifts the book, open, to the creature.] Don't suppose you could lend a man a hand, huh? Or maybe I oughta say a wing. Help me get this thing dry?

[The eaglet hops eagerly into the air, swishes its tail, and releases a happy raptor cry--it's the only warning anyone gets. One beat of those varicolored wings kicks up a gust strong enough to send wet sand, wet book, and wet apothecary sprawling with a yelp into someone else.]

B. This round's on me! L-literally. (WELCOME FEAST)

[Every time Alfyn starts to feel a little more at home, the familiar turns out to be not-so-similar to what he's used to after all.]

All right! Now this is more like it--food and spirits! Can't beat 'em for doing a body good!

[Sure, the dishes don't turn out to be quite like anything he's tried before, but they're still good after a long, trying, utterly disorienting day. And what he's real glad for are the drinks. Someone calls out something about "ginger ale," and, heck, at least he knows what ale is. Finally, something he recognizes!]

Here, I'll have a flagon of that, thanks!

[He takes a goblet and downs a swig. He's not ready for the carbonation. He cough-splutter-hiccups--and just barely manages to cover his face before the mouthful of soda spurts right out his nose.]

What in the--?!

[Oh, dear. That might even be the jester laughing over there.]

C. Nice to see you again, again (SPACE LOOP)

[One might not take much notice of Alfyn the first time they pass him, distracted as he obviously is from the knight's request by the flora available in the Brocéliande. He's happy to look up from his work and chat for a bit if addressed, but he waves off any offers to take him along.]

Thanks, but you go on ahead. This place has plants I ain't never seen before, and I've got to take as many notes and samples as I can so I know what's here to work with. Good luck with the questin', though!

[No, it's when someone comes across him, still foraging in the foliage, a second--or third, or fourth--time that things become obviously odd.]

Huh... Say, haven't you been by here before already?

[Instead of questioning how this is all possible, he's going to enjoy this moment, being able to reunite with her. He didn't get the chance to say goodbye last time but now there's no need for that. All the things he felt he wanted to say melt away just by seeing her again.]

I heard you were here, or some version of you. [He still doesn't fully understand this place but having Saber here should help with that.] I wasn't going to stop looking until I found you. [If Saber were to go somewhere after everything, this would possibly be the place, right?]

Did you have anything to do with me coming here, Saber? [Not that he would've been upset over that. He knows it'd be something very important.]

Takao is, in fact, a good student, studying does not bother him, and maintains his grades out of a sense of duty to his parents, basketball, and because one day he wants to have a future. Magic, kind of freaks him out so while he is excited, he is also nervous and has not done much practicing. Instead, he spent his time familiarizing himself with their new home.

He has explored around so he is reasonably certain he knows which baths are the men's and right now relaxing in an onsen that does not have enchanted waters and can just remind him of home sounds like heaven.

When he opens the door, he expects someone may be in there. What he does not expect is what appears to be a half-naked woman, tying her hair up into a messy bun. He jumps so harshly that the night sparrow on his shoulder flutters up and away from him in shock.

"Huh?!" He actually stands there for several heartbeats, flush tinting his ears as Takao Kazunari is struck speechless. Once he gets his brain back functioning from seeing the most naked woman he has ever seen in person in his entire life he sputters.

"I..excuse me I thought this was the men's bath!"
