Neither of us share details of our past, as it is neither of our concerns.

To be fair, you barely talk about anything except when you seem to be berating me for something. I don't think that counts. But you just go on thinking the way you want to.

[She knows she can't push him anymore. She's long since known that. Somnus has made that explicitly clear. So as she really thinks about it, she talks about a lot of nothing with him.]

[luciing]

[ A pause. ]

Berating?

Yes. Berating. Scolding. Chiding. However way you want to put that. You never fail to let me know when you think I'm doing, thinking, or saying something that you think is wrong. Basically, you're great at criticising me.

[And as she thinks about it... she doesn't hate it. Sometimes it's frustrating to feel like she gets nowhere with him, but he still comes around. He still spends time with her. And she doesn't turn him away. She must not hate him. And he must not hate her.

What a weird friendship they have.]

Our opinions differ greatly. Is it so surprising?

[ As she’s noted, they come from different eras. ]

No. I'm not really surprised...

[Her eyebrows knit together thoughtfully.]

It's just a challenge.

…You see me as amusement? Or someone you must change?

Change? That must be how it seems to you.

[She shakes her head at him.]

Sometimes you can be amusing. Most of the time, it's just educational. Intriguing. You're a curiosity. When we go home, we won't see each other again, Somnus. So I want to leave here with the knowledge that I've learned something new. About a person. About the world they come from. About their values.

[Does she gain anything from it personally? No, perhaps not. It's just what she wants. Maybe learning about others will help her improve as a person.]

[luciing]

[ He’s momentarily silent. But he looks, for lack of a better word, irked. ]

And what have you learned?

[Aerith fidgets with her hands. Well. It's not really fidgeting. It's a somewhat common thing she does when she's thinking.]

I've learned that sometimes things that were called fairy tales when I was young have some truth to them. That they weren't just stories to tell children when they were falling asleep. I've learned that in spite of my attempts to be empathetic, that I can always be more so. And this is an obvious one, but I've learned that there are many worlds that are much better than the one I come from, but that there are also some that are less fortunate.

[A pause, and then:] I'm sure I could go on, but to me it's pretty obvious.

[luciing]

[ Somnus exhales through his nose. ]

Continue to learn from them— from other people, of other worlds. You need not be amused by my Star.

[inemeraldfaith]

[She eyes him for several moments and after some thought, she wonders if she can pry out what he's really saying there.]

Okay. [Aerith concedes.] I'll do that.

[luciing]

[ His lips part for a moment, then close, as if he had something else prepared and her conceding had been unexpected.

So he replies, a bit delayed, with a nod of approval at her answer. ]

[She walks with him a bit more before she finally stops and pointedly directs her attention onto him.]

Somnus, you should do the same thing. Not with me, but with others.

[Her head tilts as she watches him thoughtfully.] It's a waste of an opportunity, otherwise.

If they are willing to talk of their worlds, then that is their choice.

[ He will not push them to speak. ]

You'd be surprised at how many people here are happy to talk about themselves. A lot of people are, actually.

[Her smile is light but present.]

Or rather, I guess I should say that it seems like almost everyone I've talked with seems happy to share things about themselves.
