QUESTION FOR A QUESTION MEME

We all like hearing about each other's characters! We all like talking about our own characters! With this groundbreaking new meme, now you can finally do both, for the very first time in DWRP history!

The Guidelines:

  • Post a toplevel listing the characters you play! If you have any boundaries you want to set re: questions you might receive (e.g. "No NSFW questions for this character"), do that here too.
  • Tag other people asking them questions about their characters. What kinds of questions? Up to you! Canon questions, headcanon questions, meta questions, some random thing you've wondered since that thread you had two months ago, it's all fair game.
  • Need ideas? I was passed this excellent gallery of various questions memes, so feel free to crib from these or just use them as inspiration.
  • Answer the questions you receive, and, once you've done that, hit the person back with a question of your own about their character(s) too!
  • You can end it there, or continue to go back and forth asking questions until you're out.

Now get to askin'!

What are your plans for Hijikata! Since he is a CRAU, what changed about him from Prismatica to Avalon? Did he change or did he remain the same? What are some memorable moments youve had with him so far here?

I really just go with the flow for the most part! Every new month is a surprise, so I simply throw him into the ongoings (with focus on the combat stuff since he views it as his duty to do the dirty work). Getting him knighted (for a sense of organisational belonging) and giving him death magic (to force him to work on his fear of ghosts) were big milestones; next I'm looking at further upskilling him in his magic and getting him some more cool equipment... just the usual RPG life!

Prismatica was pretty much a repainted ABOverse very open-minded society, so he got way closer to others there than he ever had on his homeworld. Since Avalon's scociety is more standard he adjusted right back (to be fair, he had been able to go back home in between both games), but he's more open-minded and cooperative than he was starting out! So ultimately he didn't so much change between Prismatica and Avalon as he did between his home word and Prismatica.

There've been so many memorable moments..!! I could name at least 2-3 items from every TDM and event, and otherwise too. The trials, the tournaments, all the quests... but some more quiet moments like his first meeting with Mona are memorable too! It was such a magical atmosphere with her star lights, he felt like he walked into a dream (to be fair, he was also drunk, but).

What are your plans for Mona? Will she keep focusing on her divination, or maybe branch out into some totally different direction?

'repainted ABOverse ' i fucking choked

Has he hit a point he couldnt overcome? Or doubted his strength in the roleplay game environment?

What are your plans for Mona? Will she keep focusing on her divination, or maybe branch out into some totally different direction?

Nah she definitely is all about that, and I dont wanna stray too far away from Mihoyo's interpretations. Since I am waiting for some mihoyo plot reveal that I feel she will be core/estential too. Her constellations read off as if someone who realizes fate is something to face - and that theres this need for a 'calamity and revolution.' so i am curious if that ? will uphold anything? I do like that she is 'destiny is unchangeable.' but core writing in any story, is about how becoming beyond what you think you are destined for or fated to do. is really important and healthy, and i know mihoyo is about that as well. so i am anticipating some good character changes in the future with mona.

i would like that sort of change for her here as well, if plot will provide it.

Hmm, my memory is so bad, I'm already struggling to remember if any such situation occurred in Prismatica (apart from some ghost encounters that scared him shitless), but here in Avalon he got hit with a big whammy right away the month he arrived, during the first Celliwig trials! To collect crystals for the mirror they had to enter the Cave of the Brave of Soul and face a vision of their worst fears, so he saw his commander / best friend die, and subsequently himself turning the Shinsengumi into a soulless, miserable organisation (he can't replicate his commander's idealism and faith in others, so he simply led with an iron fist). That was very upsetting for him, and if it hadn't been for Riou all but forcing him to deal with it he'd have abandoned the mission.

I'll look forward to the new revelations relating to Mona!! Gintama actually had its final movie (in place of another anime season) released this year, but playing from an ongoing canon can be quite the rollercoaster. It's good that she knows what she's all about and fully devoted to her art, but anything related to fate and destiny has a lot of weight and many influencing factors to it, so who knows what'll happen that may shift her view (both in Genshin Impace and here on Avalon)!

What is her greatest wish, and has it stayed the same between Teyvat and Avalon?

OOF! THAT IS some hard core character development, does it still effect him now?

ALSO I HEARD FROM GOKUDERA that he looks up to hijikata a lot!! How does Hijikata feel about Gokudera?

GOSH IT CAN be! Genshin's only about a year old soon, so its a bit hard to root in already established things and know what direction to go. Unfortunately I have to just wait, while the focus is on expanding the map etc. I did here we are getting fontaine next - which means Mona may be important. I did ALSO HEAR, that Mona a while back was suppose to get chapter 2 character story next. With fontaine potentially being the next place that opens up & told Mona chapter 2 may come out. I am thinking.. .Some good stuff is gunna roll forward!! Which I am happy for!

I look forward if anyone can challenge her views here! I feel like Kipposhi/nobunaga kinda does. Gosh her wish... I feel it still remains the same, 'Finding the Truth of the Universe.' Which means she more or less wants to understand what principles make up the universe.

I don't know her want or reason for this, other then she is passionately dedicated to it rn, in a humble way.

He doesn't really think of it often anymore, but it left him rattled for a good while back then! This is just a headcanon, but I think he doesn't want to outlive his commander. In one of the episodes he says something to the effect of "I'll follow him wherever he goes, and so will the others. If tomorrow he decides that he doesn't want to be a policeman anymore and wants to become a thief instead, then we'll become thieves with him". He also calls him "the soul of the Shinsengumi". He just wants nothing to happen to him, really.

Aw!! Hijikata really likes Gokudera; he was one of the first people he met and shared cigarettes and food with him, haha. Once Hijikata found out what a badass fighter Gokudera is that made him respect him a lot, so that feeling is mutual! He worried about him when he got retroactively CRAU'd because that seems to have been one hell of an experience, so he's really happy to have seen him in good shape lately (during the ship-raising venture and as an opponent during the tournament melee). If he finds out that he and Mona are friends(?) that'll make him glad too!

Getting Fontaine would be exciting!! When I AU'd Hijikata into Diluc's dream a while back Inazuma wasn't available yet, so I had to improvise... at least I knew about the Raiden Shogun and the vision hunt and isolationism! I don't even play it, but I kind of follow along with my friends. All the characters are really endearing!

Kipposhi would do that, he's an intense one! I saw him complain about Mona's divination and her confronting him, haha. Bless Mona for her unwavering dedication! By the way, I'm unclear about her relationship with her teacher... she took her in as far as I know, and gave her her vision, but there was a conflict that sent Mona into hiding in Mondstadt?

OH NOO my heart, hes really loyal!!! Does he feel lost without his commander around? Or is he content, ik you mentioned before he kinda is with the world paused.

THATS SO CUTE, im all for friendships/foundfamily etc. Two rough people supporting each other through thick and thin. Etc. Since im new to dw I dont have much crau to work with, and i really like that its cool to establish relationships in games and be able to carry that wherever you go through the years. It makes roleplaying it all more worth while.

GOD I AM SO excited and hopeful. Its funny cause you can really fit him in Inazuma now! Inazuma is filled with crazy amounts of lore I am really surprised, looking forward to each portion they will give us/unlock knowing everything is gunna be heavy with story.

sdfds it wactually wasnt her divination someone elses ? She just came in to correct & validate how 'legimate' it can be if used 'correctly.' Their interactions are really funny! Though she honestly struggles a lot with him.

Atm we are uncertain of the importance of the teacher, or what she does/is doing. We know she has to have lived for a while (long life). She talks about creating astrology - in her english. I havent asked my cn friends if they can translate that part, to see if they mean HYDROMANCY or Astrology. Because if she created astrology, then that means her teacher is centuries old. IF its hydromancy, then she could be younger.

We are certain of like... A few things? Without me fanoning and filling in.

1. Her teacher took her in.
2. Her teacher changed her name, with her. Then taught her Astrology, Alchemy, and Hydromancy.
3. We know from Lisa, that Mona and her teacher are from a 'Coven/Hexenzerkiel.'
4. We know that her teacher sent her to mondstat to pick something up from her old friend ( ALICE ), and specifically told her not to go basically looking inside the box or she would rip her to shreds.
5. Mona read the book that was her teachers diary because she didnt know that it was originally in the box Klee had. Which was what she was sent to recieve.
6. Mona stays because she didnt wanna 'get in trouble' with her teacher.

Some fanon theories; there was this locked building with a very complicated seal that matches the sigl Abyss mages sit on. Mona was the only one in Mondstat who was able to break the very complicated seal - no one else in Mondstat could open. Inside it was everything an astrologist could want.

So... You can kinda infer that this was all according to her teachers plan, atm we dont know what is going on with her teacher. What her intention was. etc! Hoping to when fontaine comes out because it kinda feels like shes either THERE or in sumeru (the dendro place, and the place where the 'Smart people place' is ).

Hijikata is used to making decisions for the whole Shinsengumi since Kondou (his commander) trusts him with that (Kondou gets sidetracked a lot, ffff), so he can handle himself just fine! After Prismatica he took being isekai'd again pretty much in stride. And exactly, he's fairly calm and not worried since he knows that nothing can happen to anyone he cares for on other worlds with time frozen.

CRAUs are a wild ride for sure... it's especially fun when people from the same game end up together again in a totally different one, but hearing other characters' stories of yet different worlds is interesting for Hijikata too! And OMG I totally misinterpreted what I saw of Mona's situation with Kipposhi, haha... but that's cute. They're both strongheaded!

Thanks for all the lore!! It does seem like Mona's teacher puts great stock in Mona if she intended for her to find and break that seal, ahhhh. I'll stay tuned for when their story unfolds further!

Since I've only seen Mona use light magic so far, is water her strongest element? Is seems like it would be, but surprises do happen!

Eats up all this info, I been reading some of his wiki here and there but hearing it from your own words. Makes things tie together nicely! I think I joked and said that Monas only sane adult friend was Hijikata bc everyone else she talks to is either way crazy or just from her world.

It is!! Its why she struggles with Light magic, can do a little bit of illusions since thats what her skills were like in the game. Otherwise she cant make shields, unless someone else makes a shield. Then she can strengthen it - but she will struggle to make shields for a longgg time.

She can make tiny stars. And step on them like platforms, but thats it!! Her control over water remains the same, though she is delighted she can do more with elemental magic here.

Aw!! That's a lot of credit considering she had to walk his drunk ass home the first time she met him! He usually is reliable, though, even if he's kind of nuts in his own way too.

That's a cool way to explore her take on her magic types! She's starting out as defence support as fighting goes, it seems... and her stars are so stylish, if she were an idol type she could make herself a spectacular interactive stage out of hardlight.

[personal profile] mayoninofukucho 2021-08-07 05:25 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a tough one! He had his angsty self-loathing phase when he was 11-17, but after that he faced the tragedy that set that whole phase off and pretty much came to terms with things.

Now at 27 he's neither prideful nor self-depreciating. He's aware that he's kind of an uncouth bastard, but he has comrades who accept him in the Shinsengumi, so it doesn't matter. He'll treat himself to things he enjoys unabashedly, then turn around and say stuff like (edgelord incoming) "I don't care if one of my comrades bites the dust. They don't need any sad words. All I can do is keep fighting until I croak too and give my best, like they did". That's back home, though; he's a lot more dedicated to protecting his fellow outworlders here since unlike his comrades in Edo they didn't choose the "live by the sword, die by the sword" life for the most part!

What about Klaudia, does she like herself?

Aww, that's good that he got better after his teenage years. Makes me feel a little less bad that Klaudia keeps calling him a coward, haha.

As for whether she likes herself... She wants to. And she's trying to. But she grew up in a family where she was the only non-human, and the child of an affair as well. Most of her family wanted nothing to do with her, her mother's husband outright hated her, and she wasn't even allowed to leave the house for fear of someone seeing her. That leaves a heavy mark on a child. She feels like there's something wrong with her, since the only people who have been kind to her are pirates. There's always a voice in the back of her mind that tells her she's not meant to be a good person, that she's just inherently bad. If she's very boastful or aggressive about praising herself, it's only to drown that voice out.

CW: Violence/Blinding

[personal profile] mayoninofukucho 2021-08-07 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, no need to feel bad!! Gintama is absolutely brutal in terms of how much the characters dunk on each other; she'd fit right in on that front.

Ahhhh... you know, these two actually have quite some things in common. It's not only the "I'm not a good person, but that's okay" (to different degrees) part, but Hijikata was also the result of an affair. When his mother, who raised him alone, died when he was 6 he was given into the care of his older half-siblings (since his father and his wife had already died as well). Only his oldest brother, the head of the household, actually showed him warmth and kindness, the others were upset and ashamed at having to take the bastard child in.

Klaudia's backstory adds a whole other layer to how upset she was when Hijikata called her a demon! He of all people should really know better, because that's precisely where his whole tragic backstory kicks in: when he was 11 a fire broke out in the village, and bandits took advantage of the panic to plunder his family home. When he surprised them and they wanted to silence him his oldest brother stepped in, got cut across the face and blinded. Little Hijikata snapped, grabbed the dagger and blinded the bandits in retaliation (let's just ignore how a theretofore docile kid managed that... anime!!). His other siblings were horrified and called him a demon, and he ran away from home and grew up into a shitty, violent teenage thug who did nothing but pick fights with everybody.

And that ties right into his most important person! Once day the kids he kept beating up beat him up, and a young doujou trainer scraped him off the ground and took him home to nurse. That guy, Isao Kondou, became Hijikata's best friend and later, when they left the countryside to work for the shogunate, his commander in the Shinsengumi. I think Hijikata sees a lot of his oldest brother in Kondou because he, too, is a warm-hearted and accepting person who basically trusts everybody (he's a bit of a disaster man on other fronts because everyone in Gintama is, but, you know). Hijikata wants to protect him and handle the dirty aspects of their work for him. There are other people he cares very much for, like Mitsuba, his love interest, but ultimately he dedicated his life to Kondou (not because he loves him more but because he didn't think he could make Mitsuba happy since he already had a trail of violence following him).

Who's Klaudia's most important person, and also how did she end up with the pirates?
sulit: (Default)

[personal profile] sulit 2021-08-08 07:02 am (UTC)(link)
Oh wow, they do have way more in common than I initially thought they did. That's wild, haha. Hijikata also has a much darker background than I realized. Klaudia would be really surprised to learn about any of that. She's got an Impression of law-upholding people, and while she assumes they're not as squeaky clean as they claim to be, she still expects that they haven't like... done a significant amount of undue violence. (Not even getting into her idea of what "undue violence" means.)

Similarly, Klaudia's most important person is her captain--which has a lot to do with how she ended up with pirates. Once she realized that her situation at home wasn't going to change--possibly ever, she got scared that she wasn't going to be able to live any kind of meaningful life, so she snuck out and hopped on the first ship to take her out of the city. (For context, this is only about a year ago for her, Avalon time included.) She hopped around a few cities, mostly keeping her head down--until eventually she heard a rumor about a ghost ship captained by a notorious woman that had been hung for murder and treason, and rose from the dead to seek revenge. Really spooky story, right?

Well, Klaudia managed to find a ship that matched the description of that ghost ship, and she decided to join the crew and investigate the ghost story. The first person she met was the captain--a very tall, dark-skin siren with ice blue hair and dress. Klaudia was expecting to have to endure some kind of prejudice or distrust, like on other ships... But the captain just smiled and welcomed her aboard. It was incredibly jarring to have someone treat her so warmly, and that left an impression.

Everyone else on the ship were likewise welcoming (barring varying amounts of warm-up time), and it was the first place that she ever felt like she belonged. Later, she heard a second version of the ghost story that framed the captain as a protector of those who love the sea and wish for freedom, and she's now convinced that the captain was in that port to save her the day they picked her up.

She thinks the world of her captain, trusts her implicitly, would do anything she says, and looks up to her like a parental figure. It's super cute.

When was the time that Hijikata was most frightened?
mayoninofukucho: (Some things stay the same.)

[personal profile] mayoninofukucho 2021-08-09 10:05 am (UTC)(link)
I know..!! It's amazing how much these two have in common. It's a pity that they're unlikely to have a heart-to-heart talk any time soon, but that's what plot devices are for (like Mirror Hijikata right now; he can at least divulge some bits and pieces)!

It's so nice how they were both given a purpose and positive perspective in life thanks to their respective leader, too. It was damn gutsy of Klaudia to go investigate the ghost ship all on her own, especially since most likely no one would have gone looking for her if she got into trouble! What caused her to be so interested in ghosts to begin with? In any case her captain sounds fantastic (and gorgeous). Kondou is only 1 year older than Hijikata, so he really is more of a big brother- than a father figure, but that's all Hijikata needed anyway.

As for Hijikata's biggest fears, canonically it's ghosts and dentists, and those do scare him shitless whenever he encounters them, but naturally that's usually more on the comedic side of things. Situations in which he's earnestly frightened usually relate to Kondou's (and sometimes other people's) safety. I don't have good media from the earlier seasons at hand, but this one from later in the series (beyond Hijikata's canon point) shows Kondou taken away by the new police force in power after a government turnover that left the Shinsengumi out of favour, and Okita and Hijikata are horrified because they know they'll execute him. After that Hijikata has pretty graphic nightmares of the execution that leave him waking up in a cold sweat, acts all paralysed, and outright says "Without him I can't do anything". His life back home really is fully dedicated to the Shinsengumi, and if Kondou is its soul, then it's one and the same.

Does Klaudia, on the whole, feel happy in Avalon (if we disregard that she surely misses her captain and crewmates)?
sulit: (Default)

[personal profile] sulit 2021-08-29 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, I got really sick and fell off the face of the earth for a while. But I'm back now! And I didn't want to leave these last questions hanging.

Firstly: That scene looks heartbreaking. Poor Hijikata! Awful how Klaudia could probably sympathize with him there, too. I don't think she's ever fully considered that she or anyone else in her crew could die; she's still very much in that youthful headspace of feeling they're all invincible. But losing her Captain would very much feel like losing the world right now.

As for ghosts... There's an IC and an OOC explanation for that, haha. ICly, she read a lot of stories when she was younger. That was pretty much her only way of exploring the world, and she latched onto ghosts as an interesting phenomenon just because they were able to go anywhere. It's not like you can lock a ghost in a room, it could just leave. Not to mention, for a child who felt trapped and like she was only half-living, the sort of fear that ghost stories inspired at least let her feel like something exciting was happening around her.

OOCly, it's kinda funny how that came about. We decided to start the campaign with all the characters knowing each other and traveling together already, so we had to figure out how they joined the crew in the first place. I decided that Klaudia (who was the most recent addition) was going to just simply come across the boat and ask for work. Sometime after that, the DM was like "Oh, here's some info your character would have heard about", and part of that was a really worrisome ghost story about the boat. So I was presented with the contradiction of Klaudia being warned away from this boat but also make the conscious decision to join the crew. Rather than change her backstory, I decided to lean hard into the ghost investigator vibe, and now she's basically Ryan from Buzzfeed Unsolved. Also, the jury is still out on whether her Captain is a ghost or not, and she's okay with that.

As for whether she feels happy in Avalon... Sort of? Mostly. She's not happy about her magic being gone, but she's interested in all the new things around her. She loves exploring, loves learning new things, and she's having a lot of fun with alchemy and light magic. She doesn't like being on her own, but she's made a lot of new friends, and she doesn't have to worry about her family catching up to her here. The only downside is that she misses being on the ocean--not just her crew, but everything about living on a boat and having the sun and the waves and the salty air, etc. That was where she felt the most free, and it makes her feel a little restless to be stuck on land again.

She also doesn't like feeling like it's on her shoulders to save the world and all. It's a lot of responsibility that she doesn't feel like she can handle, so she's mostly hoping that her crew ends up here. Then she won't have to worry about what happens to anyone else.

Welcome back (I hope you feel much better)!!

Aw, Klaudia feeling invincible with her captain and crew is cute... hopefully it'll be smooth sailing for them (pun intended)!

That makes so much sense about the ghosts! It's true, they can't be locked up anywhere. Poor little Klaudia, at least the books gave her a bit of an escape. I love how your whole campaign seems to be playing out on the high seas, that is so cool! The one I was part of before the pandemic was a pretty classic one with much on-land travelling and dungeon-crawling. Klaudia hearing the warnings about the ghost ship and going "I don't care, I always wanted to see a ghost anyway" is truly on-brand now in hindsight.

She would miss the sea around here, that adds up (a lake just isn't the same, wild as it is!). But it's good that she also finds acceptance here, even if some jerks (coughcough) will still call her a demon. The responsibility can be a little much for people who aren't from, like, shounen anime, but as long as she just exists here and contributes to the magic pool she's pretty much doing her part!
