So Darin really upset that his effort wasn't appreciated (yet at least)?
forgeabettertomorrow: (I don't really get it but...)

He's honestly not upset that his actions weren't appreciated. He's way more upset that his actions caused such devastation. In his eyes, he made the selfish choice. He chose the one over the many.

But at the end of the day, Darin stands by his choice. Hawk obviously needs a friend. He needs help to see that his life is worth living, that dying in battle isn't all there is. In a way, saving Hawk is a step towards saving himself; in finding worth and a path forward as a hero.

When he's in a better headspace, he'll know that he made the right call and be satisfied with that!

So, as things stand in our thread, Darin knows essentially that 'Edelgard's gonna Edelgard.' He knows people as stubborn as she is. Nothing he does is going to change her stance on war or anything else.

That doesn't mean he has to fall in line with her though. Edelgard is so much like the nobles where he's from that if he just let things go, it would leave a sour taste in his mouth. He might find reasons to antagonize her down the line, but at the same time, I feel like they both could stand to hear the other's side a bit more.

As of now, he doesn't like or respect her, but Darin's respect is a weird and fickle thing. In a way, he wants to know what made her what she is so he can avoid the hell out of it.

JASPER. BUDDY. LIGHTEN THE HELL UP.

So, Darin's starting to get a bit more of a feel for Jasper after their last conversation. Which is why he's going to keep willingly antagonizing him to a point where maybe he could get more of his story out of him. Darin can sense there's something deep and dark behind Jasper's motivations and it's kind of in his character to want to literally shine light on it.

It's funny because Darin and Jasper can actually kind of agree on certain things, but Darin has no concept of boundaries...so you have Jasper constantly trying to slam the door in his face only for Darin to try climbing through the window he forgot to lock.

Laughs nervously in that last tag (I'm sorry she's projecting, Darin)

So, Darin likes Kate. He really does. She's fun to hang with and to vent to and whatnot. But he also was totally caught offguard by how cynical she got. Darin believes with his entire being that 'there's always a way' to overcome something or find the path that you need to find to succeed and be your best self. It actually bums him out that someone so chill could be so cynical about the prospects of her own future. He really wants to help her see that things only really truly end if you yourself let them, and that there's so much more out there to embrace.

This guy.

THIS GUY.

So, aside from the fact that they both have alarmingly similar backstories, Darin's actually a little jealous of Zidane. He loves the guy, but he wishes he could bounce back the way Zidane does. And even though he and Zidane have similar mentalities regarding positivity and how there's always tomorrow and whatnot, he can't apply it to himself the way Zidane can.

I think that's my favorite thing about this CR though. They're so similar but still different enough and aware enough that they could acknowledge that Darin could be like Zidane if he just let shit go and Zidane could wind up like Darin if he let things fester more. It's really fascinating to me.

TBF, Zidane's still younger than him. Letting things happens a little easier.

And he did feel bad for a bit because this was kinda indirectly his fault with the Jailbreak, but someone would've done it. They've done a lot of things that can only be looked back in hindsight and take a little more caution in the future. And the faes being mad at him? Uhhh, you guys almost got King Arthur killed so... It seems like people in this world just suck at communicating, but that's Kingdoms for you.

So, Griffin's open positivity is definitely one of the reasons why he and Darin get along. Like, at this point, Darin's seen so many weird things that Griffin's appearance doesn't bother him (though at some point, he's likely going to ask about what he is.) Having another smith at the forge is another huge plus too.

That said, I'm really excited to see where their CR goes from here. Especially given the events in Celliwig, Griffin is going to see firsthand that Darin's selse of personal responsibility is sometimes his greatest weakness; that he too easily empathizes with people and that, in turn, makes him put increasingly more blame on himself. I think the two of them can have a really interesting talk about personal responsibility in the wake of all of these events.

I agree! That chat about personal responsibility will be fascinating. I think Griffin might be able to help ground him a little bit - if Darin is willing or able to listen to reason, anyway. If he's not, that's fine too.

Barb is such a great friend and questing partner. Darin feels so completely at ease around her and he knows she has his back.

I'm literally vibrating out of the visual spectrum about the aftermath thread. One of the main reasons Darin wanted to save the dragon was BECAUSE of Barbara. He's glad it's okay, but he's really struggling with what it cost. I think if Barbara were happy about what he tried to do, it would go a really long way to help him forgive himself.
