I feel like I already know but I need to hear it.

Oh Gokudera... these two have such a fun relationship, I'm enjoying it a lot!! They've come so far since their first meeting (though that already set a good precedent; Hijikata won't forget anyone who offers him a cigarette in trying times!).

He likes Gokudera a lot since he's easy company and overall a good guy, mafia or not. He worries about him since he attracts so much trouble and misery and hardship, but at the same time he trusts him to keep it together and be reliable in a battle situation since he's capable and resilient.

It's almost a brotherly relationship, but due to Gokudera also being a fighter it's perhaps more of a camaraderie, or something in the middle. Hijikata respects him not only for his skills and bravery but also for his loyalty to Tsuna!

Gokudera really is only useful in battle situations...

keeping him out of trouble is impossible. He attracts it like trash attracts flies.

He definitely considers Hijikata an ally.

Aw, that's not the only thing he's useful for! Hijikata just generally feels that they'll have each other's back in a crisis (but also simply on quests or whatnot). He likes just peacefully hanging out with Gokudera too, but Hijikata isn't all that great at small talk, haha... he sees himself primarily as a sword, ultimately, and tends to spend his free time either just training or doing weird Hijikata stuff like trying to find mayonnaise fairies.

ZELGADIS... he is Hijikata's disaster buddy!! They both have this deep understanding of what inane bullshit can happen to people and how to roll with it, and I feel that that's a special kind of kinship. I really love how they will side-eye, judge, or even abandon each other when things get too stupid, yet ultimately know that they can rely on each other in serious arcs really challenging situations! (Or can they?)

Also Hijikata lurked the hell out of Zelgadis' network post about procuring dead bodies!! He recently clashed with Cecelia when she kept calling him a necromancer and insisted that he doesn't do that (though it's been tempting him)... I'm popcorn.giffing in advance at how these two may diverge on their death mage paths (or maybe end up as specialised collaborators?).

Ventiii!! He makes Hijikata's head spin so badly, haha. He's so airy and easy-going and charming and cute, Hijikata doesn't really know how to deal with him. Most of the people he likes he can either have a brothers-in-arms camaraderie or some kind of stupid rivalry with, or, if they aren't combatants, bicker and butt heads with, but Venti is just so kind to him!

He reminds him of his first love in some ways with how he's (seemingly) fragile but makes everybody feel good just by being around (she had a mischievous streak too!), so he has developed something of a crush on him, but there are 9328427 reasons that prevent him from doing anything about it, starting with his bad boy syndrome ("Someone like me with blood on his hands can't make an innocent person happy") and ending with him feeling like it would be irresponsible, given how they'll all be separated eventually. So his "plan" is to just not acknowledge it!

POOR HIJIKATA. Well, Venti has that affect, people usually don't know how to deal with him once they realize just how airy he is. He loves poking at people. As much as he teases and pokes fun and gets into trouble though, he really does care. He's come to enjoy Hijikata's company a lot.

And he would say he's attracted to Hijikata too LMAO Tall, dark, handsome, moody, full of duty?? He's exactly Venti's type LMAOOOO But he's more than happy just flirting and winking, he won't say anything to further anything either if there's no need to complicate things. Ehe!!

Venti's teasing is so good-natured, though! Given the regular homicidal pranks and soul-crushing dunks back home it's like being sent to heaven after living among demons.

I love how that works out... it looks like neither of them will be making a move, pffff. Perhaps we can at least have them do some paired activities, though it would probably require Venti to drop some hints ("I wish I had a partner for this ritual/mission/ball") to activate Hijikata's knight mode! Then again he has a spectacular knack for self-sabotage and may just suggest some subjectively better-suited person.

Darin is Avalon's main character!! Or one of them at least, as far as Hijikata is concerned. He knows a protagonist when he sees one, and it's oddly comforting and reassuring to have one around. Much as Gintamas are opportunistic bastards who'll take the centre stage for themselves whenever they can, it just doesn't feel right if there isn't a persevering beefcake boy with a dark past and/or future around! And as an added bonus he isn't half as much of a dick as Gintoki!

Hijikata feels comfortable around Darin because he knows that he can dunk on him and get dunked on back (not that he'd want too much of that, I just mean, Darin isn't fussy or easily offended), and he knows he'll have his back and vice versa if push comes to shove. He also really wants to help him figure out how to avert his fate back home because a main character getting a bad end is just unacceptable!

I also enjoy how integral Darin has been to Hijikata figuring out his identity as a knight, isolated from the Shinsengumi as he is here. He wears his emblem with pride!!
