once again he did not DO IT, he did naht

like you said in your own writeup, they've made progress! at first claude was convinced byleth hated or at the very least resented him, and any amount of trying to explain himself was just going to make the situation worse. that really stung when byleth was his closest and most trusted confidant back home, so to get accused of things like basically wanting to conquer fodlan for almyra was like a slap in the face. for a while he was genuinely worried that was all she saw him as, and that was one of his worst fears with trying to keep his identity secret for so long.

however!! he has been trying to set aside his feelings and put the situation here first, and it seems to have worked out. he's glad byleth isn't actively hostile towards him, and they can actually hang out and spend time together as long as they avoid certain topics. it's not an ideal situation when byleth really is the one person he'd like to be open to about everything, but he knows it'd be wrong to project who she is on his memory of who she is, when they're not the same! it's fine. he's fine :')

I don't know if they'll ever have a relationship like his own byleth when trust is so important to him and she just doesn't have it, not fully. but these days he considers her a valued friend and ally, and he's glad she's there to support everyone, even if he personally will always keep her at arms' length.

THAT SAID he's still soft for teach deep down though u_u and if she ever needed him, he'd always be there to help her out, no matter what! so ig he trusts her really, he's just a dumbass about it
