kate is GOOD PEOPLE. she's also managed to do better than him at communicating (which isn't saying much, YEAH, BUT STILL) and actually said outright that she cares which he might ultimately try to say isn't true (in his blanket "nobody really cares" statements) but her actions say plenty and that sticks in there somewhere.

she's on the shortlist of people who he's willing to make gestures for like gift-giving and she's already been privy to some of his less proud moments and didn't mock him for it so if he had to begrudgingly seek assistance for anything else, he knows she's good for it. at some point they'll probably go drinking and he'll admit recent l-word adventures with ryouma and she can know that her advice helped too lmao

he also has his tendency to feel like everything's transactional even if it's not so he does hope it doesn't feel one-sided but as usual, has no idea what else he can do for others that isn't violence — but at least hopes that she knows that if anyone fucks with her he'll be willing to kill them for her :)
