well, my opinion is that Maruki is aware enough that there is no one worst thing. He kind of believes all suffering can be equally bad depending on the way a person looks at it, and changing that cognition is what he wants more than anything. His belief is more that the existence of pain, especially meaningless pain, is the worst thing that happens to people. Random acts of violence (for example) that teach a person nothing, you know?
