I think she had to learn early on to be resourceful and make due with whatever she had. She and Rab took care of each other, but she's very self-sufficient and doesn't depend on anyone else for anything. As a result, though, she had developed a habit of not being able to ask for help when she does need it because she feels like she should be able to do everything on her own (and also tries to do things for other people, too.) She's not good at taking it easy in any sense of the word.
