Against all reason, speaking his name aloud does not make Wei Ying disappear like a fleeting wish and that deep hollow fear in his heart dissolves in a rush of relief. He is still standing there, solid and real and reassuring him of the same. He looks-- not like Lan Wangji had last seen him, but like he'd always remembered him, whole and smiling.

On the heels of this heady mixture of dread and relief, longing and disbelief, his mind is overcome with a flood of questions - where has he been, how has he returned, what does he remember, does he know he'd been searching for him, does he know he regrets-- But then Wei Ying laughs and all these petty concerns are brushed away. It's no surprise at all to realize that whatever memory he'd done his best to keep of this particular joy was a poor substitute indeed.

His own smile answers him, tinged equally with affection and incredulity still. How foolish of him, to worry about what to do next. Of course, it's time to greet his dearest friend. "Have you been well?"
