Mm. It's a collection of things, really. I've met a lot of people, young and old, over a long, long period of time...you start to recognize patterns in the way they speak, the way they look... It's all well and good if you know the sort of people you're working around, but in a place like this? Best to ask up-front rather than offend some immortal deity by speaking to them as you would someone far younger.

The fact that I might even have a long shot at being an immortal deity is . . . I've definitely never gotten that before, but I get your point. I've met all types here already. I guess you never know. But no, I'm just some guy. . . . How old are you?

Classified. And besides, it's rude to ask a woman her age.

What kind of magic are you normally used to using, anyway?

It doesn't really work like it does here, where you get one kind. Mages have their specialties, but theoretically, there's nothing stopping a talented enough magus from learning how to do almost anything possible within the confines of the laws of my world's magic, which seriously is almost anything.

. . . But that's "a talented enough magus." I'm definitely not one of those, so don't get too impressed by that or anything.

I wouldn't be impressed even if you were a talented enough magus, anyway. Though since you're not that, then you must have had a specialty. So? What was it?

[Well that makes him smile widely for a moment, in some kind of pleasure that's both ironic and genuine. Somehow.]

Yeah, I do. You're pretty insightful. I specialize in survival in harsh conditions, including taking down Demonic Beasts if I can't avoid an encounter. Things like enhancing my senses and strength, navigating, covering my tracks, magically treating things that would be inedible so that I can survive on them.

Survival in harsh conditions? Huh. Odd sort of magic to specialize in but I'm going to guess that means you never left that frozen wasteland. Is that right?

Heh, not quite. I lived in that hell for a while, yeah, but not for too long, and it was pretty recent. Before that, I lived in a few different places. Some of them were pretty harsh in different ways. But nothing else will ever be that bad.

. . . Can I ask you something back? You really never had any interest in magic back in your world? How common is that?

Hm? Well, sure, and really, no interest whatsoever. No real affinity or skill for it, either, to be entirely honest, though, for those who do want to try their hand at it, it's as easy as walking into a shop and picking a rune out.

As for if that's common or not, I don't imagine you'd find a lot of farmers or tailors or grocers being interested in throwing magic around.

But they could if they were. Damn . . . that's really something. The idea of just buying your magic in a shop boggles the mind. Most people in my world don't know magic is real, and going around telling them could get you punished or killed. You have to be born with magic circuits and raised as a mage to know what you're doing, or that you can do it at all.

Huh. It's strange to consider a world where magic isn't common but I guess magic is a little different across, what's the world? Multi-planar... something or other.

Anyway. What's a magic circuit?

It's something like another biological system that you're either born with or you aren't. Everyone's born with a nervous system, a circulatory system, all those, but the magic circuits that control the production and flow of prana only exist within certain people. It's like how you couldn't pump blood without a heart. One of the reasons my magic sucked so hard back home is because mine's nothing special, the same way someone might be born with a heart defect. It's not something you can gain, get rid of, or change.
