A ⦿ Soaking in Your Arrival
    KERPLUNK, SPLASH!

Regardless of what you were in the middle of, you and your familiar have been magically pulled into the world of Avalon just above the Bay's chilly waters. After a brief plunge into the Bay, the rush of water filling your ears and soaking up into every creak and crevice of your body, you may need to cough to clear your airways when you rise above the surface. It's paralyzingly cold for a few seconds before you're approached by the Lady of the Lake beneath the water's surface. She puts a vial of a vibrant, glowing red Everwarm* potion to your character's lips. The icy water doesn't feel so icy once consumed and you'll be able to move your limbs enough to swim to shore on your own. She can't stick around to explain, she's got to get this to all the new arrivals! Many of which you'll see plopping in around you.

If you can't swim, a handful of helpful ice turtles will scoop you up from beneath and drop you off at the shore. When not helping people, the turtles are going around and hitting the ice that keeps forming on the surface with their shells to keep the surface open for the falling arrivals or pushing personal items to the beach near the new arrivals they smell like (belong to). If anyone tries to ask the Lady of the Lake for directions, she will direct you to Archimedes at the Rent-a-Ride. If anyone with Animal Magic asks the turtles, they will give the full spiel, but very slowly, and they like to get off topic and gossip about other turtles you've never heard of. The shores themselves are littered with new arrivals complaining their way up a staircase carved into the walls of the White Cliffs. There is no railing, so be careful, but if you do fall, be prepared for a mysterious sand hand to reach out of the side of the cliffs to catch you. The hand will pat you atop the head twice before retreating back into the wall. This is the Cliff Beast; despite the name, he is quite friendly.

B ⦿ The Caravan to Camelot
Once everyone is wrangled up to the top of the White Cliffs, the handsome owner of the Rent-a-Ride, Archimedes, will distribute smart phones, a pair of earbuds, and a winter cloak** to everyone before getting them settled in groups into modernized carriages pulled by horses and give them a basic explanation of why and how they've been brought to Avalon: The rest of the universe is frozen in time and your character has been brought here by a familiar that was able to bond with them. They'll have to learn magic to help save their own world from destruction, but first they've got to get them to Camelot. It is here that you have the first opportunity to decide who they will be in their new home. You'll have about an hour to wander around here, meet and greet, and pet the horses before it's time to go.

These carriages use fae technology that combats weight, so your character will be able to get in regardless of whether they're light as a feather or weigh two tons. The carts have air conditioning when it's hot, heating when it's cold, and a mystical shield to protect from bugs. There is also a mini-bar that pops out of the console with nip bottles. Characters can use their smartphones to connect to Camelot's internet service, [community profile] avalononline (AOL), to chat with other characters, watch dumb videos, learn about the world, contact Camelot Support (they'll answer any questions they can for you, from how to use a smart phone to where to find quests and resources to learn more about your magic). Be careful if you decide to use your phones while in the caravan-- if you don't use those earbuds and start forcing everyone to listen to your nonsense, Archimedes may make you walk.

C ⦿ The Red Spring
The journey from the White Cliffs to the City of Camelot is a long one, and the first evening you arrive you'll end up spending at the Red Spring, a booming resort town. Because of the volume of new arrivals and vacationers, inn rooms are assigned two-to-a-room. The rooms have two twin beds, a bathroom, a mini-fridge and microwave, and a TV equipped with a couple of entertaining video games and a few free movies.

If you don't want to relax in the room, try taking a dip in the spring for another chance to meet your fellow travelers. The waters have restorative properties that help horses and travelers recover quickly when drunk. It is known to relieve stress, improve energy levels, and mildly accelerate healing. It may be a little chilly when you get out though, so make sure you don't slip rushing back indoors when you get out!

The springs are also home to a large training grounds just outside town limits, where there are teachers who will teach basic magic safety and help you discover what kind of magic you have together with other new arrivals. Try target practice, obstacle courses, meditation circles, and other ways to try to figure out just what you can do... if you didn't already have an accidental discovery on the ride there.

Everyone needs a little fun from time to time; the locals have put together the annual Snow Games. As with all things Avalonians plan, magic plays a part in the competition. There will be three separate tiers for characters to enter. Each Tier will have its predetermined track or ring, set up and ready to go.

A ⦿ Foot Races
The footraces will be run on foot, competitors will be tied together in a three-legged race-style competition... except this binding is magic! The only way to end it is to cross the finish line.

Along the route, racers can expect to run into minor obstacles such as snow bunnies, puddles that can’t be jumped, a flock of snowbirds giving hassle, trees that upend their own roots and move to confuse the pathway. Whatever the interruption, it will come in the form of either a small creature made of magical snow or some minor hindrance to the path. Competitors will have to use magic to overcome these obstacles. Whatever your magic class, find a way.

B ⦿ Sled Races
The sled races will be run on magically driven sleds requiring two drivers. Races will not run on one kind of magic alone so be sure to mingle with other classes for this competition. Whatever magic class a character is, they will be required to feed magic into the sled to keep it going; the more magic, the faster it will go.

On the path, obstacles will come in the form of wholly washed out portions of the track that need to be reformed using magic to pass. Use elemental magic to flatten rocky areas or wash away debris. Larger creatures such as snow deer and moose congregate in large groups blocking the path, so an animal magic user could be useful for asking them to move... someone with cognitive magic could try their hand at a little hypnotizing a fellow newcomer with big muscles to move fallen logs for them. Healing mages could easily use buffers to support their fellow magicians with temporarily increased speed or strength. Use light magic to sneak past living obstacles, or dark users can cast a love enchantment and make a love match between two moose even though it's far from spring. There are tons more creative uses of magic to help you get through the obstacles on the sled's pathway. Find a creative way to use magic and get through the obstacle; make sure you are faster than the other guy.

C ⦿ Snow Chicken
Snow Chicken, Magic Vs Yeti Style... This competition will differ from the previous two; it is not a race to the finish line but instead a competition to be the last team standing! Participants will pair off and one person will climb on the shoulders of the other and try to wrestle their opponents off without getting knocked off themselves. The field is full of snow, with more coming from the sky. Your opponents will be Yeti. Try to stay on, Yeti are no slouches so teams will have to work together using their magic not only to stay put but to knock your big-footed opponents to the ground.

Just... be wary, these friendly yeti are surprisingly big on hugging as a form of congratulations. It's much more challenging to escape from a yeti's embrace than it is to knock one over.

Trumpets hail an announcement by the town crier in front of the castle. More than a few people pull out their phones to record it and post it to the AOL network for all to see.

"Hear ye, hear ye! Our noblest of lords, King Arthur of Camelot, will host a tournament on this January the 20th on castle grounds. All are welcome to participate in competitions to determine those most skilled in both the physical and magical arts. In preparation for the upcoming tournament, we are sending envoys to Celliwig. In Celliwig lies the Magic Mirror of the South, gifted to Camelot by the Fae, and a means to communicate with their royal court at will. It is a vastly important task in your journey to become magicians and to show your good will toward the fairies. Parts of the mirror's frame have been damaged. We will need those brave of soul and pure of heart to retrieve the crystals needed to repair the mirror. Those interested, the party leaves at dawn."

A ⦿ Brave of Soul
The first stop on the trip to restore Celliwig's Mirror is to a cave just north of Albion's White Cliffs. No longer a part of the cliffs themselves, this outcropping goes underground and to a dank, dark cave. It is the only place which a special prismatic crystal grows. The crystal itself is hidden deep in the cave, which can only be passed by passing into a zone in which magic cannot be used. Characters will enter the cave and must face an illusion of one of their greatest fears. Those frozen in fear will pass out and wake up outside of the cave with no crystal. Those who run will find themselves turned out of the cave as well. Only those who recognize and face that fear deep in their soul will find the path forward. The fear will turn into a small light spirit, which will smile and reveal to them the crystals they seek.

B ⦿ Pure of Heart
The second stop is past a shanty town and at the bridge north of it. The bridge itself is broken, only the ends in existence. The water itself is impassible, white rapids sweeping away anything that steps into it. Silver crystals are on the other side of the bridge, visible in an outcropping from where they are, but it appears there is no way around as magic does not work on the bridge. The only clue as to how to get across is a plaque in the dirt before the bridge.

"The pure of heart will form the bridge with a leap of faith."

Since everyone has gone as a group, it will be possible to see others walking over the water once one person figures it out. Though the clue may seem challenging, it is quite straight-forward. Characters who are pure of heart will find that if they believe in themselves, they will be able to step off the bridge and hardlight will form beneath their feet to allow them to step over the water. Those with ill intentions or those who are willing to harm others to get their way will slip into the rapid waters and may need to be saved by other characters. At least you're off the bridge, so magic will work to that end.

C ⦿ Celliwig, the Splendored Court
As the travelers leave the bridge, they turn toward the shanty town-- wood shacks and failing farms. Not a place anyone would want to visit. Those who try to run ahead will find that it disappears as if an illusion, and they will find nothing. Those who stick with the party will wait a fair distance away until the sun sets. Once the sun begins to fall beyond the horizon, the small town will begin to shimmer brilliant whites and colors-- a glamour hiding its true glory, a city made solely of crystals and glass: Celliwig, the Splendored Court. Though smaller than Camelot, every part of the city is beautiful and glistening. The population is small and it's very quiet and serene for a city. The people of the city don't seem keen on speaking to outsiders, and will typically scatter before anyone can really engage them. They seem humanoid in nature, but not entirely human. Even the animals around the city seem to be ethereal in nature, gliding more than walking.

The party is led to a hall at the center of the city-- the hall of mirrors. Those who have succeeded in obtaining crystals need to bring them and set them on a table placed before a mirror at the end of the hall, which appears to have a number of empty settings. It's unclear what happened to the mirror previously, but now it's necessary to restore it to garner the favor of the fae.

Once crystals have been delivered, people will be free to explore the quiet city, but it seems most of the city is closing shop while the visitors are around. There is a restaurant that will serve visitors food, though all of the dishes are of the molecular gastronomy variety. Alcoholic drinks seem to come in vapor form and flashes of light if ordered, but seem effective nonetheless. The local general store seems to be willing to sell supplies to weary travelers as well, but that's about it.

...That said the inn doesn't seem particularly keen on allowing visitors in strangely, so you're either going to be sleeping on the iridescent streets or camping just outside the city if you prefer the soft grass and the darkness of night. Just be aware, if you leave, you won't be able to get back into this mysterious city so easily.

MOD NOTES:
• All test drive prompts are open to anyone in the game at any time to create your own logs with, but this post should have top-levels by potential new characters only. Current characters may reply to any threads, but should not top-level comment on this post.
• If your application is accepted, you may accept TDM threads as game canon as long as both players consent. Characters may begin threading as soon as their journal is accepted to the communities.
• If nothing here tickles your fancy, try one of this month's Quests for your TDM prompt.
Note that the third prompt in this TDM will have consequences on the game's progression. After the application round, a poll will be put up to see how many characters who are in the game, both new and old, are able to obtain the crystals from the Brave of Soul and Pure of Heart prompts.
• The first "Arrival" prompts are present on every TDM, but may contain seasonal tweaks for flavor. All other prompts will change monthly.
• Questions about this TDM's content? Comment here! If you have a question about the game at-large, please head over to the FAQ.

*This Everwarm does not count toward your potion collection for those who wish to take up potion brewing. You must obtain Everwarm from the Elphame Trader's to count.
**Jackets come in a variety of neutral colors, enchanted with a fit-adjustment spell that will adjust to your character's size.

Aerith Gainsborough | FFVII

[personal profile] inemeraldfaith 2021-01-04 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
01. Not Kelpful
Oh, really!

[Aerith takes her skirts in her hands and she twists the fabric to squeeze the water out. While she's come to expect the unexpected, wherever it is she's come to, this wasn't what she expected. And although she had some help with some very friendly (if not slightly intimidating-looking) turtles, they weren't exactly capable of giving her any information.

Taking her hair into her hands, she's squeezing the water from that too as she tries to get a better look at the Rent-a-Ride centre. But instead of asking for a ride, she's asking what she thinks is the optimal question.]

Hi there, I know I'm showing up a little shoddy, but do you think you could point me in the direction of Midgar?

02. On the Road Again ♫♪
[The explanation is nice and warranted. At least once it's given. It's better than wandering around without a single clue as to what she should be doing or how to get back to...

Well. It doesn't matter now, does it? Midgar is frozen, right? That's what they said.

Aerith is eyeing the drake in all of its glory.]

So you're responsible for all of this, right? [She asks it, as if she expects an answer.] If that's true, there's going to be some ground rules while we're rooming together. But I'm sure we'll get along just fine.

[Because surely there's nothing strange about someone carrying on a conversation with their familiar, right?]

03. Pure as Snow
[She's not sure how she even got roped into this, but if everyone else is going along, what's the harm in humouring them? All things considered, Aerith's having a difficult time not being a bit nonchalant about everything.

The truth is, she doesn't fully understand where they're going or what they're doing. She doesn't really know anything about the kingdom or the fae, but it's important. And the moment magic has entered the situation...

Well. She knows a little something about that.

Either way, she's found herself at the bridge and its accompanying plaque. It doesn't take her long to figure it out. It helps that there are those who have gone before her. She has no difficulty traversing across the water and about halfway, she pauses and turns.]

...Come on! You can do it!

[Is she cheering you on? You bet she is.]

04. Wildcard
[Exactly what it says! Please feel free to hit me up to hash out some plans.]

[ Aerith has approached none other than a man who appears positively unapproachable, or at the very least, stone-faced with a sharp frown across his lips. That is to say, he seems quite the grim and grumpy one. Similarly waterlogged from head to toe, both his dark hair and his dark robes and cloak cling to him. Yet for all of this unkempt appearance, he stands as if untouched and unbothered by the cold.

(But he is. He is effected by the cold. He's just not used to having a flesh-and-blood body.)

Somnus angles his head towards her as she posits a question, blinking slowly as water falls from matted bangs over his vision. When he opens his eyes again, the woman still stands before him, soaked through just as he, and looking up at him as if he could give the answers she seeks.

So. This isn't some sort of fever-dream? He realizes, then, that he feels not a sliver of the Crystal's power. That is all he needs to know. ]

Maiden, [ he addresses her thus, then turns his head towards the white cliffs before them. ] attend to your surroundings; we stand not within our realms.

[personal profile] inemeraldfaith 2021-01-05 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
[She's still in the process of wringing out her ponytail before she frees it from the utterly soaked ribbon holding it back. Aerith frowns at it minutely before she sets her attention back onto Somnus.

Wait, did he just call her 'maiden'? She's been called a lot of things, but she's pretty sure that one's a new one to her.

She doesn't have much time to really think on it because the mere motion of his head causes her attention to move in the same direction. Yes. She supposes it's... not. Well. It's not home, that's for certain. Where exactly is she?

And this guy, this... man who's as dampened as she is, obviously isn't a citizen. Unless he enjoys going for icy swims. Somehow she doubts that.]

Aerith. [She corrects him in a very gentle, offhanded manner before she continues.] I guess you're right. Looks like you and I are in the same boat. [Aerith gestures between the two of them thoughtfully.] Does everyone come here the same way or were we just lucky enough to be thrown in the water?

[It's cold. She suppresses a shudder.]
luciing: (pic#14093484)

[personal profile] luciing 2021-01-06 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
[ Her shudder from the cold isn't missed, and in that same moment, he feels the unpleasant thrill of a shiver himself, signaling that he too is effected. How strange. Having been without a body for ages, the cold is almost alien to him. Even so, he recognizes the imperative of their current plight: they must find something to warm themselves, and his soaking, heavy cloak will not do. The tide-breeze is like ice against them while both wet.

Not knowing the answer to her question, he refrains from answering it. Instead, he focuses on what is needed in the moment. Angling his head upward, Somnus spots a few structures atop the clips. ]

Yonder caravan. Let us ascend. [ He motions to her, as if doing so would make her follow. ]
inemeraldfaith: (Default)

[personal profile] inemeraldfaith 2021-01-07 06:34 pm (UTC)(link)
[She follows the subtle gesturing he offers. It isn't hard to put two and two together.

He's old fashioned. Royalty, maybe? Aerith can't really think anyone she's met who was like royalty, really. But he sounds like he comes right out of a book.]

Right!

[Better to sound more optimistic than she feels. But she suspects that'll all turn around when she's a bit warmer. Until then, she'll just occasionally shiver as they make their way up toward the structures.]

Thanks for coming with me. I would have made my way eventually, but everything's always better with company.

[ Right, yes. She can do this. Come on, Tifa, you've endured worse heights than this. It's just a pesky little bridge... or at least that's what she keeps telling herself, but Aerith had made it across fearlessly and without an ounce of trouble. Maybe it's really not as bad as she thinks.

Nevertheless, her smile is a bit strained, eyes cautiously glued downwards as she steps with one foot after another. ]

Don't worry, I'll catch up if you want to run ahead!

[ But the encouragements do help even if she's tempted to jump the last few feet and be done with it. What's the worse that could happen? She's sure she can swim if things go wrong, so here goes-

A sprint, a leap, and then she's awkwardly trying to stop herself from crashing straight into Aerith, stumbling into her landing. ]

S-...see, nothing to it!
inemeraldfaith: (Default)

[personal profile] inemeraldfaith 2021-01-07 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)
[Even with the invitation to go on ahead, Aerith remains rooted to where she's at. Tifa's so uncertain that it's hard not to be a bit charmed by it. These little slivers of humanity that can be found in both of them... Well. Just goes to show that one can never really judge a book by the cover.]

No, no. I'm going to wait right here for you.

[And maybe that's for the best because Tifa collides right with her and though Aerith instinctively opens her arms to catch her, it definitely doesn't work out that way. It's a tangle of limbs, a crash down, and altogether laughable.

If she's hurt, she can't feel it. At least not yet. Probably because it's just too comedic.]

Hey, you did it! [Maybe focus on the more important thing at hand, though.] You okay?
omnistriker: omnistriker @ dw (003。)

[personal profile] omnistriker 2021-01-08 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
[ Not her greatest performance, but she had no idea if she was going to end up plowing face first into the water's surface or not. Comparatively, this was slightly the more ideal outcome. Slightly.

She'll probably be nursing some bruises later, but Tifa manages a small, relieved smile as she brushes the dirt off herself and tries to stand. ]

Parts of me are, though I had a little help nailing the landing.

[ She has one human-sized cushion to thank for that, one she really hopes she didn't crush. ]

How about you? Wait, there's a-

[ Her hands close around a wayward twig, pulling it free from Aerith's hair before tossing it away. ]

There. Do you think you can walk like this?
inemeraldfaith: (Default)

[personal profile] inemeraldfaith 2021-01-08 01:54 pm (UTC)(link)
[The moment she's able to put herself right to her feet, she's following in suit. Dusting herself off, trying to set herself right and not look quite the mess she's sure they did as they toppled right down together.

When Tifa reaches for her hair, she pauses for just a breath as to not disrupt her and then she finds herself smiling.

In the back of her mind, there's a subtle ache. They'll both probably hurt for a day or so after all of that.]

Thanks. [She tests out her feet before she nods.] Nothing broken here. I think you'll have to collide with me much harder if that's what you were going for. [Aerith is teasing, of course.] What's an adventure without a little danger, right? Really, though, no harm done.

[personal profile] itsmypower 2021-01-06 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
[Todoroki hasn't moved. His eyes widen slightly, over "pure" and "leap" and "heart", reading what sounds to him like warning. He's watched some others pass, so, as one in front crosses, sending small encouragement backwards, he stands in place warily, eyes to frothy-swirling water. To him, she's incautious. (How she's managed her first few feet doesn't seem clear as sign suggests.)

This waiting isn't like him. But... without his favored Quirk, and only fairytale words to lean on, wasn't it stranger going on faith? They do say "pure of heart", after all... and it wasn't all that long ago, since he's felt the most rotten. Here and now, a little clouded, he wonders at water's edge or at travelers further along, and this one—cheering him onward—who's crossing as if it's still, says he can, and so he should. Because heroes don't shy from danger.

He pauses, shouts across,]

Just keep moving!

[No need to press her luck!]

[personal profile] inemeraldfaith 2021-01-07 06:45 pm (UTC)(link)
[He's taking his time, isn't he? Aerith watches him curiously, wondering what's keeping him, but when she considers what it must look like objectively, maybe anyone else would be thinking the same way. It's just another situation where she knows she stands out. Where she isn't like most other people.

Not necessarily fearless, but with a resolve that is almost something like steel. Objectively, it might be a little impressive. There's almost always something more to someone who seems unfazed by situations like the current.

Invisible bridges don't happen every day.]

Oh, I'm fine!

[But she won't cause him any undue duress and Aerith continues right along across, making an unseeable navigation across the remainder until she comes back to a visible, solid ground. And once she's there, she lifts her right hand and waves it back and forth enthusiastically.]

You're almost there. Don't hesitate. Just keep going! Have faith.
itsmypower: (A Small Suggestion)

[He is. From the edge, keeping watch, expects the worst, clearly. Like huge, enchanted fish, or undertows to drag her inward. But since neither scenario happens, and she's crossed without much effort, her words feel all the more solid. It's fine to trust her, right? His heart's a crowded spot, so if words before were true, doubts alone should snatch him down, he thinks. Maybe. Without his ice to cross, and spying air beneath her steps, his immediate thought is "fairy". She must be!

After several moment's pause, and little in way of other options, he sprints the length forward. He does have faith, but not as much. Warm encouragement counts for something, and it's easier having watched her; fairy magic-ing paths for others. Probably. Him, too, who's pushed from start, still assumes it's all her doing, or invisible stardust blessing.

That bridge of light's beneath him now.

Once he's reached the shore opposite, he's glancing back startled.]
I owe you one. [Then, hopeful,] You're a fairy, right?

[Could she lead him to the others?]

[Sprinting is better than simply standing still, she decides, even if she can't help the smile that crosses her features at the sight. She can understand it, though. If she thought the bridge would suddenly disappear beneath her feet (not that she'd even know, since it can't be seen), she might be reacting the same way.

For all she knows, maybe that does happen to someone with doubt as opposed to certainty.

When he successfully crosses, she clasps her hands together, transparently pleased.]

Fairy? [She can't help but laugh.] That's a funny thing to call someone. [Aerith shakes her head. She's been called a lot of things, but that's probably one of the nicer ones since she was young. She's always been different and sometimes, usually, different hasn't necessarily been a good thing.] No, no. I'm nothing like that. Just a person like you and anyone else who's been crossing over.

[Aerith points to her back. Don't fairies usually have wings?] See? Nothing here!

[ The sight of the drake had Pidge staring for a moment before she moved closer. You'd think that after a year or so in space and meeting several different alien species, that seeing a miniature dragon wouldn't startle her, but you'd be wrong.

When the woman started lecturing the dragon Pidge felt a smile tug at her lips and she decided to move forward after her own familiar had floated down to perch on her shoulder. ]

Hi, I'm Pidge. Are you new too?

[personal profile] inemeraldfaith 2021-01-08 01:58 pm (UTC)(link)
[Aerith's drake, if she can even call it hers is either not listening, or is and simply isn't giving any indication that it is. In the end, all she can do is sigh and assume it's gotten the point. Time will tell whether it has or not.

When Pidge addresses her, she turns, harbouring a smile that often seems to be attached to Aerith in one way or another. She looks between Pidge and her familiar and points to the latter indicatively.]

Aerith— [She means herself.] And yes! Sounds like you are too. And this one here... your little friend. Looks a bit like a pastry. Kind of!

[The friendliest pastry Aerith's ever seen.]

"Yeah, we called them space caterpillars back home. Don't know their real species names, they don't talk, but they're really friendly."

She reached a hand up to scratch under what she assumed was it's chin, watching the glowing marks under its eyes glow brighter in apparent happiness.

"Nice to meet you Aerith, and yeah, just found myself suddenly taking a bath in an ocean when I wasn't anywhere near one just seconds before. Interesting day to say the least."

"Space caterpillars." Aerith couldn't help laughing a little, and laughter seemed better than some of the alternatives when it came to visiting something of a foreign world. Turning her attention onto Pidge's companion and new familiar, offering her forefinger.

Friendly, so it wouldn't likely bite.

"It's nice to meet you too," she greeted it with a smile before her blue-green gaze found Pidge once more. Nodding in agreement, she continued, "I experienced that too not long ago, but there was a guy who helped me find my way here. It's been a little disorienting, admittedly, but it's nothing we can't figure out. Two heads are better than one, after all. Or four in this case."

[Leon huffs something that might one day, if nurtured carefully, grow up to be a laugh. A pretty young woman standing on an invisible bridge in the middle of a rushing river, on a quest to fix a magic mirror for some fairies seems more like something out of a book or a movie than it does real life - and not the blood-drenched Romero nightmare his life had recently descended into, either.

It's more than a little surreal.]

At least one of us is confident.

[It isn't the 'pure of heart' part that's giving him trouble - he may not be some storybook hero, but he knows he's a good person. Not flawless, by any means, but he tries his damndest to do right by people, and leave the world a better place than he found it.

No, it's the faith part that's kept him standing on the broken edge of the bridge. It's possible to cross, clearly, she's living proof of that, but every instinct he has tells him that gravity is still in force, that once he steps off, he'll be plunged into icy water for the second time in a handful of days, and this time there aren't any magic rescuers with warming potions or helpful turtles in sight.]

[personal profile] inemeraldfaith 2021-01-08 02:03 pm (UTC)(link)
[Confident? Yes. Aerith does tend to exude a bit of that from time to time. Sometimes, she isn't sure that she fully is. Yet she can be an advocate of the 'fake it until you make it' style of thinking. Sometimes, anyway.

She watches him curiously, a shift in her weight as she patiently sways. He doesn't sound particularly convinced. There are some who want to do things on their own. There are some who want help and don't want to ask for it. There are some who want help and don't know how to ask for it. Leon can easily fall into any one of these categories and from observation alone, she can't yet determine which it might be.]

Sometimes you just have to have faith.

[After consideration, she decides to approach where he's left himself, back across what appears an empty strip of... nothing transcending the water below. Once she gets within arm's length, she offers to him her right hand.]

Do you want some help? I can help you.

That's usually my line.

[He gives her a quick smile, a little frayed around the edges, but holding genuine humour.

He draws a deep breath, and rolls his shoulders as though he can physically discard his doubts, then reaches out to take her hand. It pricks at his ego a little, but this is lightyears outside his wheelhouse, and his stubborn streak hasn't run towards refusing help.]

Thanks. Here goes nothing.

[He takes the first step off the broken edge of the bridge and - doesn't fall. The second step is a little more confident, and the third. He keeps his gaze fixed on Aerith, focusing on the person in front of him to the exclusion of the rapids below. This isn't a Saturday morning cartoon. He's probably not going to make like Wile E. Coyote and drop like a stone if he looks down. But why chance it?]

[ Luke saw the woman before him go ahead, just walking along the empty air like there was ground there. He hesitated a moment when his turn came up, peering over the edge as his krayt dragon nestled against his shoulder contentedly. ]

[ He snapped his head up when he heard the woman from before shouting encouragement, and he managed a bit of a sheepish smile. Well, it could be done, and he knew he had enough confidence to manage it. How bad could it be. ]

[ With a deep breath, he took a step forward, trying very hard not to flinch when he knew his foot was over what was supposed to be air. He forced himself to keep walking as he traversed the air, though it didn't keep his legs from feeling like jelly when he finally got to the other side. ]

Ah... well. I never want to do that again.

[The best thing she could have done was not pressure anyone who was struggling to cross the bridge where it seemed nothing was there. As such, she kept her cheering to a minimum as he proceeded across and when he did finally make it to where she was waiting, she beamed.]

A little adventure is good for the heart. At least if you come across another invisible bridge, you'll know how to handle it. Once you've done it, you can always do it again.

[Looking him over, she assessed his condition. Aside from what seemed to be a post-bridge-crossing adrenaline, he seemed all right.]

Everything good? Nothing hurt?

[ He paused a moment, allowing her radiant positivity to bring a small smile to his face. He couldn't exactly disagree, but he couldn't help but hear Yoda's voice in his head, "Adventure, excitement; a Jedi craves not these things!" ]

[ He paused a moment, making a show of dusting off his pants and working his prosthetic back and forth, before offering her a big grin. ]

Looks like I'm okay.

[Truth be told, Baldr doesn't seem exactly nervous about crossing the bridge-- he's already taken a few steps out onto it by the time he hears her voice. To him, this is like mirristry: something he doesn't fully understand, but whose existence isn't in question. Rather, it's more that he's now thinking about the "pure of heart" part and wondering just how accurate this magic's criteria are, because he certainly wouldn't consider himself to rank all that highly in that particular field. He's fairly sure that betraying one's lord probably knocks one down several pegs, even if said lord has forgiven them for it...

Either way, when she calls out to him, he brightens up almost instantly, picking up the pace as he trots toward her with a smile.]

To be guided by the radiance of such a dazzling star... I'm truly fortunate indeed. To what do I owe this blessing?

[Baldr no.]

[Oh. It's nice to see someone crossing who isn't necessarily afraid. Now, whether he actually is or not (or potentially acting brave for the sake of traversing across it), Aerith has no way of knowing.

His response, however, flattering as it is makes her laugh.]

I'm just helping those along who might seem as if they need it. [She gestures over to him before she continues.] But to be fair, you don't seem like you fall into that. Even so, everyone needs to feel like they have someone in their corner at some point. Whether they think they do or not.

[It's never easy asking for help or support. Fortunately, Aerith is simply the type of person to offer it unconditionally. For most people, anyway.]
